Put a bird on it! (i.e. yay I can draw birds 8D)

Soooo there are a few important things about this piece. After painting Lugia I was thinking I might as well do Ho-oh, and since Lugia was going down and to the left into the sea, I had Ho-oh going up and to the right into the sky.

And speaking of the Lugia fan, a fundraising coordinater for Hal-Con (sci-fi/fan convention in Halifax) sent me a message after seeing it on Etsy and asked me to donate a fan to their charity auction. I'm thinking I'll donate this one. So it'll be selling at Hal-Con this November. c: The money will go to support a children's hospital there.

Then yesterday I was cleaning out my closet and re-discovered my book on Chinese painting, and looked through it for a while, and decided I was going to paint some plum trees. So there are trees. With flowers. I'm not sure if they were a better decision over leaves, but I like them anyway. And now I need to do more regular ink paintings, but I think I need to find a stiff-hair sumi brush first, because the only two I have are pretty soft... but I just love the way ink... is. Even when I struggle with it I feel like it speaks to me in a way I just don't get with other media, especially digital.

Also I finally got to use my vermillion ink. I was so excited when I realized Ho-oh is vermillion. XD I probably should have watered it down a little more, though--it's ridiculously bright. Ho-oh should be bright, I guess, but that's why I wonder if I should have stuck with green leaves to avoid as much clashing. Oh well, I still like it.

I'm not really sure how much I like its wings... I had trouble with them in my sketches, and I wanted to shape them more like regular bird wings, but it looks like I could have gone with the regular curving shape anyway. That wouldn't have looked as traditional, though... as with the Lugia fan, I wanted to emulate traditional Asian painting styles, and as Ho-oh is based on the Chinese fenghuang I wanted to resemble that a little closer. Hence the long, flat tail and trailing legs.

I'm shoving my wallet into the screen, but nothing's happening! D'ohhhhh I wish you could make more of these and sell them.
